THE D�SHI GALLERY ANNOUNCES CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR REFLECTIONS

on exhibit from July 31 to September 7, 2008

The D�SHI Gallery at the Susquehanna Art Museum is proud to distribute a Call for Entries for an upcoming juried exhibition titled Reflections. The Call for Entries can be accessed on www.sqart.org or by calling (717) 233-8668 ext 4.� Submissions are due NO LATER THAN July 20, 2008.� The show will run in the D�SHI Gallery from July 31 to September 7, 2008. The DOSHI Gallery is accepting both two- and three- dimensional work.� Artists are asked to consider the following theme.

Reflections - Based upon the source of light, the nature of the surface, and the perspective of the viewer, reflections give off luster and sheen, or they can mirror an image. Reflections can reveal dimensions that are hidden from the viewers� eyes, or the presence of virtual realities. Beyond this they also serve as a metaphor for the psychology of the self-conscious mind.

In the Museum�s main galleries through September 21 is Treasures from the Attic:� Unseen Collections of the Capital Region.� This exhibition explores the unseen wealth in permanent collections of regional institutions.� The Susquehanna Art Museum borrowed works from the Historical Society of Dauphin County, the Perry County Council of the Arts, The State Museum of Pennsylvania, the National Civil War Museum, the Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin and Marshall College, The Trout Gallery at Dickinson College, the Cumberland County Historical Society and the Hershey Museum.� Romare Bearden, Pablo Picasso, Jacob Eichholtz, Stephen Etnier, Thomas Moran, Red Grooms, Jacob Lawrence, Robert Rauschenberg and Gustave Courbet are a few of the artists featured in this exhibition.�

The D�SHI Center for Contemporary Art, founded by Maya Schock in Harrisburg in 1972, was incorporated into the operations of the Susquehanna Art Museum in 1997. In spirit with the mission of the original D�SHI Center (named for a Japanese word meaning �brotherhood�), the D�SHI Gallery provides a venue for emerging and established Pennsylvania artists to exhibit their work, explore new ideas, and develop a dialogue with the Museum and the community.

THE D�SHI GALLERY PRESENTS WORKS BY BRENDAN LOPER

Loper to be on exhibit from June 19 to July 27, 2008

The D�SHI Gallery at the Susquehanna Art Museum is pleased to showcase the work of Lititz artist, Brendan Loper. His solo exhibition will run in the D�SHI Gallery on the first floor of the Museum from June 19 to July 27, 2008. An opening reception will be held on Thursday June 19^th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Admission for the reception is free and open to the public.

Brendan Loper received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2006. He has been featured locally in the 2006 Halloween Ball at the Lancaster Museum of Art and the 2007 and 2008 Annual Juried Show at Lebanon Valley College. In 2007, Mr. Loper served as a guest lecturer and critic at the University of Pennsylvania�s Summer Painting Program.

Brendan Loper strives to make sense of contemporary society by exploring the themes of modern life in his paintings. Mr. Loper�s work invites the viewer to reflect on the mistakes and triumphs of contemporary society and creates a unique dialogue to explore our perceptions of history and society.

Also on display in the Museum�s Main Gallery through September 21 is Treasures from the Attic. This exhibit features the unseen visual arts treasures of other regional non-profit organizations. Pulling pieces from the State Museum, the Historical Societies of Dauphin and Cumberland Counties, the Hershey Museum, the Civil War Museum, the Trout Gallery, the Phillips Museum of Art and the Perry County Council of the Arts, the Susquehanna Art Museum has amassed an unprecedented collection of works removed from the public eye for decades, and in some cases, centuries.

Rubia Quilt update.

The Rubia & WCA quilt project was presented as a
highlighted project at the June Rubia board meeting.
It was met with great excitement and interest. Two
board members are considering bringing the quilt to
their universities during the national tour, this
includes Southern New Hampshire University and
Dartmouth College. Once details are finalized we will
post this to the website.

The project has been an inspiration both in the US and
in Afghanistan. In a new project with Rubia in Kabul,
Afghanistan, one of Rubia's master embroiderers is
working with women in the only in-patient, female drug
rehabilitation center in Afghanistan. As part of their
treatment the women are learning embroidery and
creating artwork, that will hopefully display in the
USA.  This project has been an inspiration to women
all over the world, including women artists who have
never been exhibited before.

The Santa Fe Folk Art Mueseum, has decided not to
display the Rubia quilt, as I learned this morning.
They believe it would be unfair to display the quilt,
since Rubia is also an exhibitor at the event. 

So, the month of July is open, if we have any
interested venues!

I am currently writing a feature article for the next
Rubia newsletter about our national tour and inaugural
event in May. I will send an email when it is
published.

I have some difficulty expressing my gratitude to the
Philadelphia Women's Caucus for Art. Your generosity,
support, and time towards making this collaborative
project work is immeasurable. I sincerely thank you
for supporting this project and thank you for all of
your help in organizing, creating and exhibiting the
project.

Thanks to Beth Cornell for the new resource with art lessons from ISTE, the International Society for Technology Education.
What should the relationship be between Technology Education and Art Education?

As you know, I have been writing about Design Education on my blog
http://MartinRayala.blogspot.com where I argue for more design education in art programs.

Can Art teachers work with Technology teachers? Can we provide 20 lessons to help Technology teachers support Art and Design education?
