From the Editor:
Greetings from the “burgh!” I hope that all of our members received their 2007 spring and fall editions of our newsletter and enjoyed the articles that were selected for them. If you did not receive either of these newsletters or have any comments, please forward them to me at the e-mail address listed below.
In the fall issue we tackled the issue of advocacy. It seems that we must now promote ourselves in order to keep our jobs, so this was a relative issue to address. Art Education has suffered many losses in funding throughout the past years and we as an organization feel this is a travesty.
The arts help many students who may not excel in other subject areas to have a different outlet of learning. Many recent studies have shown the arts enhance other subject matters. Take for example the book by best-selling author Daniel Pink, “A Whole New Mind.” Pink makes a compelling argument for art education being the most important preparation for the 21st century. He claims that the future belongs to artists, inventors, and other “right-brain” thinkers whose abilities are hard to outsource and automate and will be in high demand in the new global economy. Mr. Pink feels that students today need to master six “high-concept, high-touch” abilities that are essential for professional success and personal fulfillment in the “age of abundance.” This is a fascinating book to read and I hope that all of you spare some time to peruse this book and think harder about the importance of Art Education in Pennsylvania’s educational system, whether public or private.
Remember, if any PAEA member has some upcoming exciting news; please feel free to send it to me. If making a contribution for the newsletter, please have the document attached to e-mail in either “Word” or “AppleWorks.” Remember if you contribute an article or tip for the newsletter, you will receive a tee shirt for your contribution. The deadline for our “spring issue” is February 28, 2008.
Yours in Art,
Valerie Foucart Vincenti, PAEA Communications Chair/Editor
