OPERATION WE CARE |
At the February PAEA board meeting it was decided that our support of the Louisanna students afftected by hurricane Katrina would continue. We are purchasing books for a New Orleans school from a book wish list they created on Amazon.com. This list works just like a gift registry. Please consider purchasing one of the requested books for the students at A. P. Tureaud Elementary School. This would also be a good service project for an art club or NAHS chapter.
Region Two adopted one of the art teachers who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. PAEA co-president Mike Rupp initiated this Operation We Care project, asking each region to select an art educator to “adopt.” Our teacher is Mary Ann Taylor and she teaches at Trent Lott Middle School in Pascagoula, Mississippi. In March, Kelsey Thomas, one of Martha Blair’s students, wove a beautiful afghan in shades of purple and cream. The afghan was sent to Mary Ann as an introduction to our project and we received a lovely thank you from her.
In April, another box was sent, containing an assortment of items for Mary Ann. While in New York for the NAEA convention, Kris Fontes bought a lovely cream-colored scarf from a street vendor, a Chinese sumi-e brush, and a small handmade book to send to Mississippi. Also in this box was a set of Gustav Klimt postcards and a piece of fused glass jewelry that Kris had made in the new high school glass kiln.
