Winter 2008--Frida Kahlo exhibit Print E-mail

Beginning February 20, the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) features the exhibit “Artist, Icon, Rebel: Frida Kahlo,” which runs until May 20th.

Organized to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth, this is the first major Kahlo exhibition in the United States in fifteen years.  It presents over 40 of the artist’s most important paintings, ranging from her earliest works to ones completed before her death in 1954.  Also included in the exhibit are over 100 photographs of Kahlo and her husband, the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, along with other members of her social circle.  Many of these photographs come from private collections and have never been exhibited before.

Kahlo’s jewel-toned paintings are deeply symbolic.  Many are self-portraits, which depict the turmoil and suffering of her personal life.  Severely injured in a bus accident, Kahlo lived with chronic pain and health problems.  She also suffered emotional trauma due to Rivera’s frequent womanizing and extramarital affairs.  Despite these issues, Kahlo persevered, becoming one of the best and most-famous female painters of the twentieth century.

Region 11 will be organizing a tour of the Kahlo exhibit.  Currently we are planning for a Saturday in April.  Once the date is finalized, we will begin signing people up to join us.  PAEA members are free; non-members pay the full cost of a ticket.  Audio guides and free teacher packets will be included.  Please contact ME Osterneck with any questions.
