Sarah Becker Print E-mail
Outstanding Elementary Art Educator
from the January 2001 PAEA Newsletter

becker_sarah.jpgSarah M. Becker has been a valued member of the Littletown Area School District Faculty since the beginning of the 1990-1991 school year. Her positive attitude and love of art and children are reflected in the outstanding quality of the program of art instruction that she has planned and maintained at Rolling Acres Elementary School. Remarkably, she instructs all 900 children in the building and is still able to maintain a high quality art program. Activities she has promoted include Art-to-Art, computer art, and spring art show where all of her students have their art displayed throughout the school. She also conducts enrichment classes for interested students over their lunch recess. Among her other accomplishments, Sarah has taken a leadership role in the Littletown Area School District in the area of technology. She proposed a grant that obtained computer labs for both elementary and middle school art rooms. She is also a member of the district’s technology committee.

As a regional representative for PAEA she breathed new life into region seven. Region seven members look forward to her newsletter and workshops, which are offered to them regularly. Through attendance at, and participation in, PAEA leadership retreats, Sarah has honed her leadership skills. In 1998, she was recognized by PAEA as Outstanding Regional Representative. In addition, she was a chair for the Eastern Mini Conference held in Lancaster in 1998. Sarah is a promoter of the arts as well. Each year she works to procure funding to allow the traveling art museum, VanGo! to visit her school. Sarah is quick to stand up for the arts by citing research that supports the benefits children derive from the arts.

Sarah’s advocacy for the arts plays an important role in a small district with limited resources. Through her enthusiasm, hard work, and careful planning, Rolling Acres students have displayed their arts in a variety of venues. She has assisted in the establishment and maintenance of the District Arts Honor Gallery. Additionally, in the District Administration Office, works of art by District students are displayed as the finest examples of creative expression. Her dedication has provided her students with the opportunity to experience the vitality of artistic expression as it pervades our everyday lives. Instilling the love of art is a mission with Mrs. Becker.
