Outstanding Secondary Art Educator
from the January 2001 PAEA
Newsletter
Sherry
Knight began her teaching career in 1977 at Trinity
Area High School. She has been awarded The High
School Teacher of the Year Award twice by her
peers.
Sherry has been involved in numerous
aspects of art. She has played a major role in
various committees in her district, such as Strategic
Planning, Monitoring Committee, Technical Committee
and helped to write the district’s Portfolio Assessment
Plan.
The promotion of the arts, both
in school and community, is another of Sherry’s
priorities. She sponsors students art shows both
locally and out of state. Sherry played an important
role in Trinity Arts Day and Heritage Festival
by arranging for visiting artists, demonstrations
and publicity. She is involved in the school’s
theatre program as the artistic director and set
designer. She also sponsors numerous art clubs
within the school setting.
Involving students and being involved
in the community is also a high priority for Sherry.
Having students paint windows for local establishments,
working with senior citizens, and donating her
time, talent and energy to various organizations
are just a few of the ways she is involved. Sherry
also gives to her students on the weekends. As
advisor of the drawing club, she has arranged
weekend trips for her art students to Washington
D.C., New York City, Cleveland, Boston and Chicago.
She has recently awarded and Andy Warhol Museum
Outreach Grant. This will allow her students to
partner with the museum in various art initiatives.
Sherry frequently takes her student teachers from
many local colleges.
Sherry has been active in the arts
community outside of the school setting. She has
presented workshops at the local, county, and
state levels. Further proof of her dedication
is her active participation in the various offices
she has held in PAEA.
Sherry believes that all students
can learn and enjoy art. Her favorite expression,
“Art is life, simply look around and view it,”
tells it all.
