A finalist from each participating school district was selected whose flag design will be matted and displayed as part of a Youth Art Month exhibition in the Rotunda of the state capitol in Harrisburg from March 3-14. Each student, their family and art teacher will be invited as honored guests of the PAEA to Harrisburg on March 10 for YAM Recognition Day. They will be greeted by Senator Robbins (District 50) who will be presenting a Resolution on the Senate floor that day recognizing Youth Art Month and the importance of art education for all students. Students will have seating in the Senate Gallery for that. In addition to a luncheon, they will participate in a tour of the “Palace of Art” as our state capitol is known. One of the flag designs was selected to be made into a flag representing our state and will be flown in Washington, DC for the Youth Art Month celebration. Individual student recognition will be posted to this site at a later date.

YAM is a time to think about our CONNECTIONS with:
- Our Students – Do we make their art experiences valuable. Do we help them realize the importance of art in their lives; what it means to them. Could they develop a statement or quote. Do we respect their visual statements and honor them by displaying their work.
- Parents - Do we communicate with them. Can they be involved in some of our activities with their students. Can they help with displays, contacts, field trips, art clubs, arrangements.
- School community – Do we display student work throughout the school. Do we keep our administrators abreast of our activities, verbally, involving them, giving them art work for their offices. What about the school board – Display student art work for their monthly board meeting in March. Do we work with other teachers – could we enhance something they are teaching with a valuable art activity. What about the Parent/Teacher organization. They often appreciate being involved if it’s an activity for the students. They may donate funds for a project.
- Local community – Is there someplace to display student work – a bank, library, hospital, shopping mall, local gallery. Community service organizations may donate money for a project. Local restaurants often will use placemats you design and print out. (Check your IU for printing projects). Are there artists and speakers who would come to your school?
- Local publicity – Do we submit articles and photos of our programs and student art activities to our newspapers. Check out radio and TV stations, and cable networks/systems to run ads for art – like public service announcements.
- Local and state government officials – Could they make a proclamation recognizing YAM, attend the opening to your art show, attend a YAM breakfast you hold.
A special project could be planned for YAM or build up an existing project more through publicity and a special display.
