OUTSTANDING MIDDLE LEVEL ART EDUCATOR
Michele Mapstone is the Middle School Art Educator at Williamsport Area School District where her students are strongly supported through the entry and exhibit of their works. She holds her Masters of Education from Mansfield University.
Mapstone’s ability to unite her students to professional paths is led by example:
- Strong dedication and successful awards to numerous student competitions
- Active Participation in student-artist led “Paint the Pig” fundraiser for their local library
- Chairperson to the annual Lycoming Valley School Arts Show
- Organized “Student Works Night” every April inviting parents and the community to view the works of every student
“Mickey” (as her colleagues know her) has exemplified her role as artist as well as art educator. A professional artist of 40 years with a specialty in portraits, her own high expectations have led her to successfully publish her first novel. She actively displays her work in museums and has recently held one-woman shows at the local library and café in Williamsport. Her unique ability to present herself as an artist also encourages her students to exhibit with confidence.
“No matter her form of expression, Mickey continues to share her creativity and passionate spirit with others. This is what learning in the arts is about evolving, sharing, continuing to be and do better…”~Sandra Young (nominator)
Mickey teaches painting at a Williamsport Area Community College and also volunteers her time teaching arts and crafts at a nursing home.
