OUTSTANDING ELEMENTARY ART EDUCATOR
Leslie Gates was the Elementary Art Educator at Greencastle-Antrim School District where she holds her M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from Shepherd University, WV. Gates is now working on my Ph.D. full time at the University of Maryland
Gates has been a supporter and presenter to NAEA and PAEA:
- 2007 NAEA Convention Presentation “What Do You Know? Using the INTASC standards as a framework for assessment”
- 2005 PAEA State Convention Presentation “Learning is Worth Proving”
- 2007 Developed and hosted a local art education conference in Shippensburg, PA.
The PA Governor’s Institute for Arts Educators has benefited from her expertise and profound dedication. She has attended by invitation as a Content Area Partner, served as Faculty Member for the Institute Presented “Using the PA Math and Reading Anchors in the Arts Classroom” and has served as Steering Committee Member.
Gates takes the lead in her district’s art department by integrating technology into her classroom. Her students are engaged through the use of official government and museum websites and a content -centered interactive website she created. This year, she integrated a new computer lab as part of her own classroom. She developed a unit that had her students engaged in the research and understanding of the theft of Iraqi artifacts after the US invasion.Through the clear comprehension of a culture’s roots her students then were able to design and create their own monumental tribute to the lost art of Iraq.
