If you are a member of the Pennsylvania Middle School Association:

To PMSA Members from Ron Musleno, Penn State Great ValleyPlease take the time to complete the online survey below. The purpose is to survey a group of current middle school teachers and administrators who might have some perspective about any differences they have experienced with attention to traditional middle level practices before and after high-stakes testing such as those associated with NCLB.  I am trying to get a feel for whether or not we have sacrificed any of those practices related to grouping, teaming, etc. as a result of the increased pressures to perform well on PSSA, etc. Thank you. The survey may be accessed at:https://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=GJEpwj17rJFFdUe4su1Dsg_3d_3d

Arts and Humanities Update

February 4, 2008

Volume 1, Number 2

IMPORTANT:MySpace – PA arts education has a MySpace page!  If you’re signed onto MySpace, go to our page and begin to contribute.  Let me know if you’re interested in becoming a moderator and I’ll get you the password so you can post blogs and other information. del.icio.us – I’ve created an account at del.icio.us.  If you’ve not used del.icio.us, it’s a very useful tool.  If you’re like me and you work on different computers, del.icio.us stores all of your bookmarks on the web.  That way, the bookmarks you have on your home computer are available at work or on any machine that you use.  del.icio.us also allows you to “grab” bookmarks that other people have found, saving you work on a project or in research.  If you have a del.icio.us account, my account is pennarts.  Add me to your network and you can see links to professional organizations, grant resources, general educational policy and many, many other tools.

Grants – If you’re looking for funding for a special project or your arts program, I’ve started a grant section on the Keyarts forum – www.keyarts.ws/forum.  Check out the links already there and add the links that you use.

PETE&C

Congratulations to Dr. Mara Linaberger for being selected to present a session at the 2008 Pennsylvania Educational Technology Expo and Conference!  Mara’s session will share the podcasting work that the Content Area Partners (CAPs) did at the 2007 Governor’s Institute for Arts Educators.  The CAP group became a self-directed learning community with the help of Mara and the other CAP leaders: Dr. Meg Barney, Dr. David Berlin and James Ritchey.  PETE&C will be held at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center from February 10-12, 2008.

Keyarts Forum

The Keyarts Forum is hopping!  The forum has been revamped to include sections for the different art forms, iPods in the arts classroom, advocacy and much, much more.  My hope is that the forum will become a tool for collaboration among arts educators from all over our large state.  Please spread the word about this forum and keep it going: www.keyarts.ws/forum.

Homework!

I have a homework assignment for everyone!  If you have not yet signed onto Second Life, a virtual world, you need to try it.  I had an amazing in-world meeting this month with Craig Cunningham from National-Louis University in Chicago.  Craig is part of a network of educators from the Midwest who are using Second Life to provide professional development to teachers.

Second Life is a great forum for professional development because it’s free, unlike most learning platforms like Elluminate.  While SL was not created specifically for educators, teachers across the country have found that this is a fantastic opportunity for networking and learning.

My SL name is Dmitra Shostakovich.  If you’re interested in Second Life, shoot me an email and I can meet you in-world for a chat!

AND Magazine

Last month I learned of a fantastic magazine currently available here in the Harrisburg area.  It’s called AND Magazine, and it’s published by Jump Street, an arts and education organization in Harrisburg.  I met with Brandon Gryde, AND’s publisher, in early December.  Brandon wants to take the magazine statewide.  His plan is to recruit students to write regional articles and place them in a “shell” version of the magazine.

AND Magazine is unique in that the content is almost exclusively written by middle and high school students and has an arts focus.  If you teach in Cumberland, Dauphin or York counties, AND is free and available to your students.  If you’re located somewhere else in the state, log onto AND’s website and keep updated on the push to go statewide.

The conference in Scranton was wonderful. If you have never attended a PAEA conference it is well worth the effort. Plan ahead for next year, keep you eye on the website for information.

Don't be shy about attending regional events. Get in touch with your regional representative and get involved!

Time to apply for the Pennsylvania Governor's Institute for Arts Educators is approaching. As always, go to keyarts.ws for information.

Welcome Jamie Kasper to Arts and Humanities at PDE! Jamie has replaced Beth Cornell, who is enjoying a busy retirement!

YAM is the plan for March! Check the website for information on this years flag design. It would be great to have a flood of designs from the Middle!

What are the needs and wants of the Middle Level Art Educator? Be in touch and let me know!

Have a great November!

Just a few reminders

  • Don't forget to check the PAEA site for information on TARP (Teacher as Artist in Residence).
  • The Pennsylvania Governor's Institute for Arts Educators will be July 15-20, 2007 at the National Christian Conference Center in Valley Forge Pennsylvania. Go to keyarts.ws for details; go to http://www.papde.ws/ to get directly to the application section. The online application process can be completed in just a few steps.
  • Also at the keyarts.ws site is the data collection survey. A Key for Decision Makers ... Data Collection in Arts Education 2006-2007 is a survey tool to assist teachers and administrators in making better decisions. The survey has 61 questions and takes about 25 minutes to complete. It does have a feature that allows you to save your work and come back at a later time to complete the survey.
  • From the keyarts site, you can also access the PDE site and get your identification number for your Act 48 hours. This replaces using your Social Security number. You may also want to check with your district for a copy of Act 48 Professional Education Plan Guidelines-January 2007 from PDE. Act 48 information and updates are also at the PDE website.
  • Don't forget to use keyarts.ws as a resource for information on the Assessment Anchors.
  • Please consider nominating an outstanding middle level art educator for one of the PAEA awards. The information is in the About PAEA section of this website under awards.
  • Let people know the good things that you are doing in your schools!

• Take some time and go to the Pennsylvania Department of Education site. There is great information there that can be used by arts educators. Check the Assessment Anchors, and don't forget to check your Act 48 hours while you are at the site!

• At the Governor's Institute for Arts Educators, we worked with the Assessment Anchors, and we now have educators through the state to help find answers and information for teachers. The state has been divided into regions, and each region has contact people (Content Area Partner- CAP) ready to share information. This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it for your region and CAP contact information!

• If you have never attended the Governor's Institute, or if it has been a few years since you attended, please consider attending this year. It is a very worthwhile experience. The learning is valuable and the networking is priceless. Go to http://www.pde.state.pa.us/ and click on the K-12 Schools tab, click Professional Development, then click Gov's Institutes/Acads for Educators and finally, click on Arts Institute Information.

• If you have, or are starting, an Art Club in your school, please read the Pennsylvania Art Club information in the Elementary Division news at this website.

• If you have written or read a powerful letter in support of art education, would you please send me a copy? We have members and educators facing some disturbing cuts to their programs and in many instances, letter writing is a way to communicate information to those making decisions about the arts. All information will be appreciated!
