The Wonders of Wheat Paste - January 2022
Em will share a brief history of wheat paste, show local Philadelphia artist examples, and teach us how to mix and apply our own wheat-paste glue. The presentation will provide insight into how this technique and concept can be discussed and utilized in the elementary, middle and high school art room. Em will share the use of the medium in her personal practice, especially when coping with the early unknowns of the pandemic.


Printmaking - How to Print Anything and Everything - December 2021
Christine Medley will present printmaking techniques from her new book, Printmaking: How to Print Anything on Everything. She will discuss her book and demonstrate various printmaking projects that are great for small and large groups. Online Event - Family Heritage Collage Making with Alison Zapata - November 2021
We will explore the Frick Museum's past exhibit, Frida Kahlo - An Intimate Portrait: The Photographic Albums, and work with artist Alison Zapata for this virtual professional development event. During this workshop, you will use your personal/family photos or related images, as well as words and symbols, to create a collage that represents your culture, heritage and/or family history.


Online Event - Back to School with the Mattress Factory of Pittsburgh! - October 2021
Virtual Tour -  The new show "making home here" features five emerging and mid-career Pittsburgh-based artists: Gavin Andrew Benjamin, Naomi Chambers, Justin Emmanuel Dumas, Njaimeh Njie and Harrison Kinnane Smith. The exhibition plays off the ideas of home and domestic space – home as both a place of dislocation and belonging, home as an imagined or public-facing space and an intimate place that holds family stories and aspirations. The five artists explore liminality, placemaking, familial bonds and systemic racism’s impact on the housing market. Working across a range of mediums and playing off the domestic spaces of the Mattress Factory Annex, the artists mine personal and public histories to create immersive environments that welcome visitors to enter and contemplate what it means to create a home.

Accessing Federal Funds for Art Education - October 2021
With an unprecedented amount of federal dollars now available for education, Mark will explain the current state of play related to what federal funds are available, provide some examples of ways to use them and show you how to make the ask for these funds in your school. Mark will help you understand the right people to talk to in your school to make the ask for funds and explain how this knowledge can potentially help you also receive non-federal funds that are part of your school's regular budget.

PAEA/NAEA teacher leaders and NAHS Chapter Sponsors will share their tips for success in starting a NAHS chapter as well as share some of their most impactful projects over the years.


Joys and Challenges of Mindfulness in Art Education - September 2021
This WebinART, Presented by PAEA Region 10 Representative Kristin Baxter, Ed.D., will have three parts. First, Kristin will present a sample of art lessons that she has taught in after-school art programs at the Northampton Juvenile Justice Center in Easton, and at Central Elementary School and Dieruff High School in Allentown. Kristin also teaches a First-Year Writing Seminar called, “Yoga, Mindfulness, and Writing” at Moravian University in Bethlehem and she will share a culminating project where her students write and illustrate children’s picture books based on mindfulness, in collaboration with children from a local elementary school. Participants are encouraged to share examples of art projects they have taught with their own students. The second part of this WebinART will be a lively, compassionate discussion of the challenges or problems with mindfulness in the art room. For example, since mindfulness and meditation can be considered religious practices, are public school teachers leery of infringing on First Amendment Rights? How do we address cultural appropriation, since mindfulness and meditation have roots in sacred Buddhist traditions? The third part of this WebinART will introduce participants to an exhibition of children’s and teen art at Payne Gallery at Moravian University, in Bethlehem, PA, which will run from January-March 2022. The theme of that show will be “Mindfulness.” Teachers will learn how to submit their PreK-12 students’ work to that show.

The Hiring Process for PreService Teachers - May 2021
Kelly will walk us through her journey of landing her position in art teaching. She will offer tips to help new professionals through the hiring process such as what to bring with you into an interview and ways to make yourself more marketable to school districts. This WebinART is geared toward pre-service teachers seeking first employment, but can help experienced art teachers looking for a position change.

How to Create a Virtual ArtSteps Exhibition - April 2021
PAEA YAM Chair, CJ Matz, will take participants through the ArtSteps Virtual Exhibition set-up in this interactive WebinART. Come prepared to work along with CJ by having about 5 images ready for experimentation. Feel free to set up your ArtSteps account before the WebinART. Setting up your free account only takes a few minutes and all you need is an email address or an existing Google account.

Online Event – Region 2 – Piñata Making Workshop March 2021
Esther Ortiz, piñata maker in the Erie region, shares the steps of making piñatas while connecting to her Mexican culture. Ortiz’s piñata workshop offers two sessions. Session 1 provides a context for her experience in piñata making and takes participants through step-by-step instructions on making the piñata shell. Session 2 focuses on decorating and filling the finished piñata.

Online Event – Region 7 – Using VTS on a Virtual Tour of The Modernists at SAM February 2021
Tinal Sell, Director of Education at the Susquehanna Art Museum, takes us on a tour of SAM’s current exhibition, The Modernists: Witnesses to the 20th Century. This virtual workshop gives teachers an introduction, or a refresher, on using Visual Thinking Strategies with students when looking at a work of art. 


Online Event – Region 1 – Alcohol Inks at Home with the Brandywine River Museum of Art February 2021
PAEA and Education staff from The Brandywine River Museum of Art explore the use of color in works by the Wyeth family and other artists through a virtual tour. After the virtual tour, they share how to use Sharpie markers and rubbing alcohol to create bold, fluid designs on ceramic tiles. This technique is similar to popular alcohol ink projects, using markers you have at home.

Feminist Pedagogy and 3D Printing in Middle School January 2021
Dr. Jennifer Motter, Dr. Karen Keifer-Boyd, and Dr. Yen-Ju Lin present their collaboration in guiding preservice art educators to interpret feminist art pedagogy and create art WebQuests involving 3D printing for middle school students. They discuss their collaboration, enabled through the use of digital technologies, such as website builder applications, video conferencing tools and 3D printers. They also address how the use of digital technologies enables collaborative making and disrupt race, gender, and social hierarchies in the learning environment.

The Legacy in Art Education Series honors an art educator who has made significant contributions to the field of art education in the state of Pennsylvania during their career. In this WebinART, we celebrate Kelly Armor as she discusses her work as a folklorist, performing artist and art museum educator.

Online Event – Secondary Division – Secondary Trauma and Compassion Fatigue October 2020 (recording not available)
Nora Benko, MS, childhood counselor, a former teacher and current doctoral student specializing in research on compassion fatigue and secondary trauma for educators, leads participants through the process of identifying, understanding and working through secondary trauma they experience as educators. Participants can use this knowledge to develop personal plans for long term career sustainability and to prevent teacher burnout.

Dr. Andrea McDonough presents research-based, best practices in mindfulness. She shares strategies to incorporate mindfulness in the art room environment as well as empower art teachers to take time to practice mindfulness throughout their daily routines.

A panel of local experts from Region 1 address concerns and questions submitted by our membership and also share their experiences and go-to resources during this online event. While there are general guidelines available regarding school reopening, there is little information on ceramics classes specifically. These panelists are providing their expertise to the best of their understanding, backed by both personal experience and research. Use your own judgment to adapt the information you feel would be most relevant to and effective in your classroom setting.

Maureen Feineman, a Geosciences professor at Penn State, and Heather McCune Bruhn, an Art History professor at Penn State, share how to make watercolor paint from powdered ochre pigment, along with a discussion of the geological and art historical significance of ochre.

This WebinART presented by Karen Rosenburg helps art teachers with inclusion strategies and shows how to develop a plan for teaching students with ASD. Teachers learn how to set clear expectations for behavior, read an IEP and Revaluation Report, and find information on student’s skills and challenges. This historic, first WebinART by PAEA featured several online platforms to organize and highlight student work. Robin Brewer shows how Google sites is a simple format for students (grades 6-12) to showcase their own work. Leslie Grace shares her experience with storing student portfolios (grades K-8) on Artsonia while raising funds for her school. Jill Anders shows the basics of Seesaw for any grade level.
