Please join the PAEA Book Club as we tackle: Wicked Arts Assignments: Practicing Creativity in Contemporary Arts Education.
The almost 100 arts assignments compiled in this instructive new volume are designed to foster cross-disciplinary creativity in the visual arts, performance, theater, music and design. Everyone who teaches the arts knows the value of the assignment that is seemingly simple, but which nonetheless challenges students to the maximum.
In Wicked Arts Assignments, the tasks are organized around the following themes: Go Public, Narrate, Remix, Explore Nature, Engage, Soul Search, Make Some Noise, Localize, Build & Move, Keep in Time and Hack. The assignments can be carried out in various contexts from primary schools to higher education, from home to online. They are intended to spark the imagination of both teachers and students, contributing to new, topical educational and artistic practices. The book is complemented by a theoretical framework and interviews with experts in contemporary arts and education. Join us and be inspired by fun, poetical and inspiring challenges for teaching the arts―for students of all ages and teachers of all disciplines.

PAUL E. BOLIN, AMI KANTAWALA, and MARY ANN STANKIEWICZ

Session dates: January 9, January 23, February 6, February 27, 2023, 7:00-8:00 PM with a tentative extra session on March 6, 2023.

Please join Dr. Mary Ann Stankiewicz, co-author of Steppingstones: Pivotal Moments in Art Education History, as we look at important milestones in art education history within the United States and globally. This is the first extensive volume on the history of art education to be published in 20 years. Readers will be challenged by new interpretations of how art education has changed over the years. The book investigates contemporary issues through a lens toward the past, including issues of race, cultural protocols, intersectionality, international influence, White privilege and other social concerns. A few highlights of the book include biographical accounts of African American artists and educators, the role and influence of the Harlem Renaissance, art education in colonial India and the complex relationships between colonizer-colonized histories, art education in the United States with discussion of specific international influences and much more. This book explores dynamic and spirited narratives about various people, institutions, events, tensions and international perspectives that have shaped and continue to direct the course of our field — Art and Design Education. We think this book offers important insights that all art educators should know.

JENNIFER DASAL

Session dates: October 3, October 17, November 7, November 21, 2022, 7:00-8:00 PM
In her podcast and book, Dasal shares many familiar stories about famous artists such as Michelangelo, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Andy Warhol and hundreds more. Then she deep dives into unexpected new research that, as the title explains, is unexpected, slightly odd and strangely wonderful. She is a master at turning her research into finely spun stories that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Even if you have an excellent background in art history, you will learn new things about familiar artists and you will probably learn new things about artists you’ve never encountered before. ArtCurious is a colorful look at the world of art history that presents an engaging look at why art history is and continues to be, a riveting and relevant world to explore.

AUSTIN KLEON
Did you know that Austin Kleon will be a featured keynote speaker at the Annual PAEA Conference in October 2022?

Session dates: Tuesday, June 14 and Tuesday, June 28, 2022, 7:00-8:00 PM
Join Kristin Baxter, Ed.D., PAEA Region 10 Representative and Associate Professor of Art at Moravian University, as we do a hands-on exploration of Kleon’s best-known book, Steal Like an Artist. This little book is an inspiring guide to creativity in the digital age and presents ten transformative principles that will help readers discover their artistic side and build a more creative life. Kleon reminds us, "Nothing is original, so embrace influence, school yourself through the work of others, remix and reimagine to discover your own path. Follow your interests wherever they take you - what feels like a hobby may turn into your life’s work. Forget the old cliché about writing what you know: Instead, write the book you want to read, make the movie you want to watch," ... paint the painting you want to hang on your wall.

Race and art education

Lynette Brown, PAEA Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Chair, will host for this brand new title in the Davis Art Education in Practice Series.

Lynette and guest hosts will address issues of race in education with a focus on classroom practice in important and timely conversations with book club participants. There is sparse literature that supports teachers in developing the kind of knowledge and sensitivities about race needed for today’s art classrooms. This book aims to provide a well–informed introduction to essential concepts, vocabularies, strategies and methods for engaging race and racialized human differences in a constructive, equity–oriented manner. Kraehe and Acuff carefully explore topics including how race and racism enter classrooms, and concepts like unconscious bias and microaggression. This book includes units of instruction and practical suggestions for art educators to move us forward in the ways we think about race. This book club will meet on Zoom for 4 sessions and will include post–session questionnaires for additional Act 48 credit.

Session dates: March 14, March 28, April 11, April 25, 2022

Participants will receive a link to join the sessions through email prior to each session.

Participants will only need to register once and can receive up to 8 hours of Act 48 credit.
