April's PAEA Student Artist of the Month is
Allie Fergus!
Allie attends Plymouth Whitemarsh High School and was nominated by PAEA member Candy Maggioncalda.
Candy had this to say about Allie:
Allie is a creative student who shows excellent technical and conceptual skills in both photography and art. Allie is taking AP 2D Studio (focusing on photography) and she is also an AP Drawing student. Recently, she had a photograph juried into the 2023 PSEA Touch the Future Competition and she has received academic and artistic scholarships for all of the art colleges she applied to. Allie has participated in many community service activities related to art during her high school career, especially since she is an officer for Plymouth Whitemarsh High School’s National Art Honor Society and Photo Club. Allie is always willing to help out with anything. She knows how to balance her academics, community service, photography and art skills along with working outside of school. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for her.
Allie had this to share about art education.
Art education presents young artists with a myriad of techniques, artists, and ideas that they can take inspiration from to grow their own styles. The time mandated in a school day gives students time to create that they might not have otherwise, this time and knowledge allows young artists to find passion and respect for art. Along with this, as students take art classes they're also working with other young artists. They can grow and learn together and form friendships based on this shared interest they have which is really essential for students going through school. Art education allows young artists to find a passion for art through practice and through the curriculum, and create friendships with artists similar to themselves as they go through the same stages of artistic growth together. What advice would you give to other artists? Don't compare yourself to other artists around you. The best part of art is that you make it how you want since there are no boundaries, feel free to play with mediums, experiment with new technologies and ideas, and don't feel pressured to conform to standards pushed by those around you. No matter what, just keep creating what you want to create.
