November's PAEA Student Artist of the Month is
Mallory McGrath!
Mallory attends West Allegheny High School and was nominated by PAEA member Leah Shuck.
What Leah has to say about Mallory:
I have had the pleasure of teaching Mallory in class for the last 2 years. Coming in as a freshman in Art 1 last year she brought so much skill and creativity as well as potential for growth. When we were doing the ripped paper collage I remember worrying that her image was too complicated and I was overjoyed that she proved me wrong. Mallory's work has a distinct style even when trying new things...which she isn't afraid to do! Even with her proficiency in many mediums, including graphite, colored pencil, and mostly acrylic paint, when doing an open-choice project in Art 2 this year she chose to try oil pastel, a medium she'd never done before. Mallory has an active imagination and an insatiable appetite to learn new mediums and skills. She is never one to rest in her comfort zone. She is a hard worker and takes advantage of opportunities presented to her to further herself as a young artist.
Mallory had this to share about her biggest influence:
My biggest influence and inspiration is probably my grandparents and my art teachers. My grandparents are both extremely supportive of my art and always asking to see more. They always express how proud they are and have been there for me through everything I've done. My art teachers inspire me because with every project there is always a goal to make them proud. Plus, both are very good artists that I look up to and aspire to be like. I believe art class and education is important because it's good to know different ways to properly express your thoughts and feelings. Also, if you have physical representations of your experiences, like paintings, you'll always have something to look back on and remember the moment by. Advice I'd give to other artists would be to trust the process. As long as you're creating, you'll get better with time. I would also say to pay attention to your surroundings. You can learn a lot just by paying attention to the way your body moves as you walk, or by looking at the way the street fades into the distance.
